राजा कृष्णदेवराय और तेनाली राम महल के बगीचे में शाम की सैर कर रहे थे। वे आराम करने के लिए एक पेड़ के नीचे बैठ गए। पेड़ पर बैठा कौआ राजा के ऊपर बीट गिरा देता है। राजा एक पल के लिए दुखी हो जाता है और फिर उसके पास तेनालीराम को चुनौती देने का विचार आता है।
"तेनाली, क्या आप जानते हैं कि हमारे राज्य में कितने कौवे हैं।"
तेनाली इसके बारे में सोचता है और राजा से कहता है कि वह अगले सप्ताह राज्य में कौवे की सही संख्या बताएगा।
अगले सप्ताह राजा और तेनाली फिर से शाम की सैर पर चले गए। राजा तेनाली को कौवे की गिनती की याद दिलाता है जो उसे करनी है। तेनाली ने जवाब दिया,
"हाँ, महामहिम, मैंने गिनती की है। हमारे देश में दो लाख पचास हजार पांच सौ तिरपन कौवे हैं।"
कृष्णदेवराय अचंभित थे, लेकिन तेनाली के आत्मविश्वास की भी सराहना कर रहे थे। वह उसे और परेशान करने की सोचते है।
"तेनाली, मैं दुबारा गिनती करवाऊंगा । कम या ज्यादा होगा तो कड़ी सजा के लिए तैयार रहना।"
तेनाली जवाब देता है
"कोई चिंता नहीं, महाराज। मुझे अपनी गिनती पर पूरा भरोसा है।"
"यदि यह आपकी संख्या से अधिक या कम निकलता है?" कृष्णदेवराय ने पुछा।
"महाराज, तो कुछ कौवे या तो अपने रिश्तेदारों से मिलने के लिए दूसरे देश में गए हैं या अधिक कौवे हमारे देश में अपने रिश्तेदारों से मिलने आए हैं।"
तेनाली की वाक्पटुता पर कृष्णदेवराय अपनी हंसी नहीं रोक पाए।
King Kirshnadevrai and Tenali Rama were doing their evening walk in the palace garden. They sat under a tree to take some rest. A crow sitting on the tree does a dropping over the king. King gets unhappy for a moment and then he comes up with an idea to challenge Tenalirama.
"Tenali, do you know how many crows are there in our kingdom."
Tenali in his usual poise thinks about it and tells the king that he will tell next week the exact number of crows in the kingdom.
Next week the king and Tenali went for their evening walk again. King reminds Tenali of the counting of crow he has to do. Tenali replies back,
"Yes, your majesty, I have done the counting. We have two lakh fifty thousand five hundred and fifty-three crows in our country."
Krishnadevrai was amused but was also appreciative of the Tenali's confidence. He thinks of troubling him more.
"Tenali, I will get it recounted. If it will be more or less then be ready for a stiff punishment."
Tenali replies back
"No worry your majesty. I am confident about my counting."
"If it comes out to be more or less than your number?" Kind still was not in a relenting mood.
"Your majesty, then some of the crows either have gone to another country to meet their relatives or more crows have come to our country to meet their relatives."
Kirshnadevrai could not stop laughing over Tenali's sense of humor.
